Service Organization Provides Eye Banks in 13 Countries
On Dec. 7, 1905, Dr. Eduard Zirm performed the world’s first corneal transplant in the what is now the Czech Republic. On the 100th anniversary of that historic procedure, the World Health Organization estimates that corneal transplants could restore the vision of 11 million people worldwide.
Since Helen Keller’s call for Lions clubs members to become “Knights of the Blind” in 1925, Lions have dedicated themselves to aiding the blind and visually impaired. The service organization’s support of eye bank services is one way it is answering this call.
The first Lions eye bank was established in 1944 in New York City, and today there are approximately 60 Lions eye banks in 13 countries. The Lions eye banks are not-for-profit organizations that must be sponsored by a Lions club or district and establish a working relationship with a medical facility.
Lions eye banks often provide healthy corneas to countries in Central and South America, Africa and Asia that do not have eye banks.
There are no professional fees or processing costs to the donor or the donor’s family. Instead, the eye bank assumes all costs involved in procuring corneas.
Lions assist local eye banks as corneal tissue transporters and eye bank volunteers. Lions also encourage the public to become corneal tissue donors. Club members help to financially support the eye banks, holding fundraisers and purchasing necessary medical equipment.
Panic Is No Laughing Matter
Burt Reynolds revealed his vulnerable side when he realized he was being steered into marriage. One day while browsing the furniture department with his would-be bride, he suddenly collapsed onto a bed and doubled into the protective fetal form. Moments later, he was sucking oxygen through a brown paper bag, his eyes wide and darting.
His panic attack was interpreted in a humorous way for the sake of the movie, but real panic and anxiety attack survivors know there’s nothing funny about it.
Impending divorce triggered my first major panic episode. It stirred almost daily, waiting for any event that would bring it to the surface in a full blown attack. Sure enough such an event did arise, but not from any outside force.
While I contemplated taking a shower one day, anxiety swept over me, along with an unexplained dread that something terrible was going to happen.
Suddenly, I was afraid to eat, afraid to go out, afraid to stay home alone.
As I drove down the highway, uprooted trees and black garbage bags along the route took on indistinguishable grotesque shapes. Passing through overpasses was particularly alarming as I dreaded losing control and smashing into the abutment. Elevators and stairwells triggered a new symptom: claustrophobia.
Particularly alarming was the day I was afraid I’d lose control and toss myself off the 6th floor balcony. That’s when I knew it was time to get help.
Two years of psychiatric treatment eventually brought an end to those terrifying events. Until 10 years later when I decided to switch careers and return to college. I was 37.
Then, it happened again. I was in the huge school cafeteria walking along the self serve line. It began as I became intensely aware of the drone of voices echoing throughout the quadrant. Quite unexpectedly, anxiety swept over me. I thought I’d lose my mind as my heart and thoughts raced and that old familiar dread took hold.
Struggling with the attack, I made it to a seat and tried to eat my lunch but it soon became apparent it wasn’t possible. The initial fear was verging on panic. I rushed from the cafeteria to the nursing station at the top of the stairs, but at that point, I felt it might pass.
I continued aimlessly down the busy hallway. All I could think of was getting away from the noise, the bustling students and the insecure openness. Moments later, sitting in the peaceful, dimly lit student lounge, I curled up in an armchair and fell asleep. When I awoke, the attack had passed.
Years ago, my doctor had explained that my attacks were a result of a chemical imbalance. He also pointed out that a lack of confidence and a sense of impending loss of control were related to my anxiety.
During my therapy, I persistently plied him with questions and bombarded him with every sensation I had over the previous week. He was a man of few words, always turning my questions back on me to interpret. Through his few choice words, worries of things going wrong in my life were soon mere flashes, rather than mounting thoughts to stoke my simmering anxiety.
His advice echoed when I emerged from that major panic attack at the college 10 years later. I was in a strange environment undertaking a new career. The attack clearly was brought on by my fear of failing, along with numerous other fears.
It all made sense. I was moving into a new frontier with new faces, new challenges. In all likelihood, I would emerge a new person, but as happened with my divorce, it was a time when I feared I would lose control of my body, my mind and my life.
What saved me was something my psychiatrist said years before when he responded quite simply to one of my ‘what if’ questions. His reply has become my ‘mantra’, if you will.
In an effort to make me focus directly on the issue and think rationally about the outcome, he merely asked, ‘So what?’ Who could have known that those two small words would become my rock? The moment a terrifying thought entered my head, all I had to do was ask, “So what? What’s the worst that could happen?” and it was never as bad as I’d imagined. And today, it always brings me back to earth. There is help for you, too.

Federal Reserve Bank Controlling Mortgage Interest Rates

Created in 1913, the Federal Reserve sets monetary and financial policies for the financial industry and trades currency with foreign countries. The Federal Reserve effectively controls mortgage interest rates in a unique manner. Many people mistakenly believe interest rates are actually set by the Federal Reserve. They clearly are not. Instead, the Federal Reserve directly dictates the rates at which one bank can loan money to another. Lets take a closer look.
Every bank in the United States must hold back a percentage of its monetary assets. Put another way, the bank is forced to maintain a savings account. While this money cannot be loaned to consumers, it can be loaned to other banks. In exchange for the loan, a bank agrees to pay back the loan at an interest rate known as the federal funds rate. The Federal Reserve determines the federal funds rate. When you here Alan Greenspan has increase the rate a quarter point, this is what they are talking about.
You are probably wondering how the federal funds rate could possible impact mortgage rates. While there is no direct link, there is a practical one. Banks universally react to the federal funds rate, particularly whether it was raised or lowered. If the federal funds rate is raised a quarter point, you can expect mortgage rates to move up a bit. The bond market also impacts mortgage rates, which is why you will not see the exact same movement as occurs with the federal funds rate.
The Federal Reserve System makes a major effort to maintain a low profile. Most people, however, feel it is the real power behind the economy, not politicians.

Thinking About More Business
What does an old Russian joke have to do with getting new business?
Did you increase your business in the past 12 months? Don’t discriminate between more new clients or old clients spending more money — count the increase either way. If you didn’t, you really should be asking yourself why not.
Yes, I know — it all started with the Internet implosion. Then came terrorist attacks. Next, the global recession. And after that, a war that threatened to destabilize the worldwide political structures for peace and harmony. Who knows what’s next, but the fact is, none of these “cataclysmic” events has really mattered.
How can I say such a thing? Because for most of us, several more clients or a few additional transactions can turn a mediocre year into a great one. And large scale macro-level trauma and transition don’t really impact our micro-level ability to find that next client or do the next deal. The only place those macro-things matter is in your head, but — for good or for bad –what happens in your head tends to powerfully affect what happens in your business.
Yefim, a Latvian migr who worked for me years ago told a joke (if you can call it that) from the old Soviet Union. He said, “What’s the difference between an American and a Russian?” “The American expects things to get better, and the Russian hopes they don’t get worse.” Well, after a year or two of lackluster, even dismal, business, you’re probably getting more like the Russian: not sure if things can ever get better. And you’re questioning whether you can expend any resources to do anything about it.
When you believe the world is going to hell in a hand-basket, not taking steps to improve your business seems natural. You expect that clients and prospects will say no to even your best proposition. After a while you simply stop trying.
Thinking about more business starts with thinking such a thing is possible — nay, probable –but if you’ve read this far you still may be a believer. And if you think increasing your business is possible — despite what’s reported on the evening news — then it is time to get busy. No more excuses. Not the weather. Not the season — I don’t care if it is Summer or Christmas or Ramadan. Not even the economy.
So what’s the good news? In 1966, Richard Farina wrote a book called “Been Down So Long It Looks Like Up to Me.” Feel that way? Great, because making a difference is going to be easy. You’ve probably been dormant so long, any improvement will look simply marvelous.
Here’s the secret.
There are only three ways to grow your business: you can find new clients, you can have your clients buy from you more often, and you can have clients — old and new — buy more each time.
“You mean that’s it?”
Listen closely, grasshopper. This little formula can yield great insight into how to approach your business right away — if you let it.
Want help? Answer the following questions.
What ways are you currently using to find new clients now? Go ahead — make a list, even if it’s only in your head. Are those ways working? (No — probably not, otherwise you wouldn’t be reading this.) Are they the same ones you were using a year ago? (Shame on you — they weren’t working a year ago, why should they work better now?)
What new products or services have you introduced in the past six months to help your current clients? (You haven’t– no one’s spending any money.) Of course not, they already have all the stuff you sell they think they need.
What new combinations of products, or products and services, or subscriptions, or renewable services, or… It boggles the mind how many ways there are to increase the value of each individual purchase. How many of these new offers have you made to your prospects and clients in the past six months? (I’m not even going to wait for your answer.)
If you meditate on each of these questions like a Zen Koan — you will assuredly invent at least two — and perhaps many — new ways to increase your business.
Of course, these aren’t the only things you can do, but they are a great start.
Can’t come up with any ideas? Let your clients do the work for you — after all, it’s in their own best interests. Do a survey — call up 10 or 20 and find out what they need from you that they can’t get. Even simpler — use one of the online survey tools like http://surveymonkey.com or http://zoomerang.com.
While you’re at it, you may want to insure that your core product still makes sense. After all –clients aren’t buying it like they used to. That can only mean a few things — either you’re doing a bad job telling people why they want it, or they just don’t want it.
Both of these problems can be fixed, but it’s important to make sure you’re fixing the right one. If you fix your marketing and tell people about something no one really wants, you’re just wasting money. On the other hand, if your products really are right for the market, but you’re not communicating effectively — you might end up changing your products unnecessarily.
I hope you realize from this simple exercise how easy it is to quickly begin generating new and increased business. Just ask yourself good questions and invent some good answers. After all, that’s what thinking is.
Then take those thoughts and put a few into action.

Sometimes an A/R Broker has a choice, but not all the time. For instances, there are not that many companies that provide Accounts Receivable Financing for health care or construction. It all depends on what type of business you have and what your needs are.
